Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs are student-created projects that extend learning beyond the classroom and build real-world skills. SAEs help students gain experience in record keeping, customer service, financial responsibility, work ethic, and career readiness. Many students choose projects that match their interests, such as working with animals, exploring careers, or running their own businesses. Projects can be paid or unpaid, rural or urban, and in many areas of agriculture. All agricultural education students are expected to maintain records for their SAE program.
Below are the 39 Iowa FFA proficiency areas, which outline different types of SAE programs students can pursue. Students are not limited to just one area or project—many participate in multiple SAEs. These areas are meant to inspire ideas and help students explore project options that match their interests.
